Get Groovy with 70s Fancy Dress Costumes

By

The most important pre-requisite of a party is always fun. The party has to have good music people can dance to, good food and drinks and must have a good number of guests who are able to easily relate to each other. Party-goers must have something in common to talk about. A great and sure-fire way to get a party going is by doing a theme. No theme is as fun and as great conversation starters as reliving the glory days of the 70s.

70s party costumes are always fun to wear because of how colorful, outrageous and wild the fashion was at that time. When we think about the 70s, we think about flashing lights and disco balls, roller rinks, sequins, platform shoes, bold make-up and the tune of Bee Gees’ Stayin’ Alive might play over and over in our minds.

We think of the songs and the music of the famous era that style forgot because music was probably the greatest influence on 1970s fashion. The hippie fashion of miniskirts, bell-bottoms and bohemian frayed dresses from the 60’s was brought into the 70s but it was taken into the extremes with the commemoration of pop culture. Let’s not forget the new heights brought by the towering platforms on both women and men. John Travolta definitely brought style into platforms for men. By illustrating the popular music of the 70s, here are some 70s fancy dress costume ideas:

Disco

When we reminisce of the 70s, the disco genre is always easily associated with this era. The disco divas reigned the era with names such as Donna Summer, Anita Ward and Gloria Gaynor. Abba was a hit, as well as the Bee Gees with their hit songs in the movie Saturday Night Fever. To channel 70s disco fancy dress, start with the afro hair. If you don’t have the curls to start the afro or if you don’t want to risk your curls, there are lots of afro wigs on sale. Big colored ones are more fun and are much of a hit in parties. For ladies, if you’d like a simpler look, try parting your hair in the middle and placing a headband across your forehead ala Cher. For the outfit, bell bottoms are fail safe choices both for men and women. The bigger the bell bottoms are the better. If you’re gearing towards something sexy, hot pants, which are really short shorts. For the top, choose the paisley print or any colorful and loud prints. Cropped tops were a popular as well. For men’s 70s fancy dress, 3-piece with big lapels and bell bottoms were the trend. Both ladies and guys can then wear the highest platform shoes and disco the night away!

Rock

The rock genre may not always come in mind when thinking of the 70s but it did exist and thrive in the 70s. Journey, Aerosmith, AC/DC and Kiss already rocketed to stardom in the mid-70s. To pay tribute to the 70s hard rock, start with the make-up and the hair. Who could forget Kiss and their extravagant face make-up? Eye make-up can be seen on men and women alike. The lightning on the eye was popular then as well as contoured cheeks and well-defined brows. Hair was scrappy and layered. For the outfit, don on logo or graphic tees of popular bands then pair them with fitted flared jeans or corduroys. Add a fur vest or leather jacket if you like to make a bigger statement. Always add on aviator shades and layers of gold necklaces. Finally, don on leather boots. To channel the 70s glam or pop rock, instead of the laid-back graphic tee, go all out with metallic ensembles --- silver or gold flared jumpsuits.

Once you’re set with your 70s fancy dress costumes, remember to have fun and groove the night away. The fancy dress won’t matter if you’re not having fun.

The 1970's were all about fun, bold colours, rockn roll and peace baby. I still to this day love the 70s dress style, its flamboyance and its bold patterns. Yeh Baby!
