Things to Know About Credit Control

All business owners realize how important it is to have control over debtors. However, small business owners surely find cash management, particularly credit control, somehow daunting.

Businesses have an option to get administrative help, though it may not always be present. Not to mention that credit management is just a part of one employee’s job description. A credit control job of course requires some sort of expertise and special knowledge. Credit controllers who have enough experience may be considered for the job, but not those only qualified by training on debt collection.

The fact is that business owners themselves can play the role of credit collectors in charge of credit control management as well. Although many business owners would do it out of necessity and not want.

As a business owner, you are supposed to be ready for a situation where you are almost running out of money because you have clients who are late payers. In your effort to put up an effective debt collection system, there are some things you need to take into account.

Terms Of Payment And Credit Accounts

Terms of Payment. Before you allow your company to engage in trading, it is essential that you first determine the period of time that your clients have to pay their debt. Considering the fact that instant money is necessary for many start- up businesses to keep afloat, the best alternative is the cash on delivery scheme, though may not be a good option for business to business transactions. Therefore, if you want your young business to establish a good reputation and not to seem very desperate, it will be better for you to give your clients up to 30 days before the due date.

Credit Accounts. While it may be a sign of a good long term business relationship with clients to have a credit account open for them, make sure that you first get gold of several business references which will include one from the bank they are using. Be careful not to be very tempted by the idea that you are about to have a regular customer. Keep in mind that an account can only be considered as a good one if you can get the clients to pay invoices.

It is undeniable that a number of businesses have a bad habit of taking the risk by letting some of their clients extended credit and longer time to pay instead of reminding the clients of their overdue invoices. Businesses would usually think that if they refuse an extended credit, their clients are likely to not have any transactions with them. This is true in some cases, but you should take note that a client hasn’t spent anything as long as they pay their overdue invoices.

Always remember that as long as your business provides the quality service within the time previously agreed upon, you can always demand for punctual payment. Never hesitate to implement your own policies for payment.

Reminders. Majority of businesses would normally depend on how fast the clients’ accounts departments can pay invoices punctually. However, this is not what actually happens most of the time. In fact, it is fairly easy to overlook invoices. There are also cases where invoices get lost, which of course results in longer time to wait for the payment. To avoid this, it is advisable that you make a call to your clients’ accounts department at least one week ahead of the due date.

Credit control jobs and credit management are never easy. You will need to invest a lot of time and make a lot of effort particularly in the area of debt collection. However, as we all may know, an efficient and structures credit control system is one of the basic things to be created to ensure the success of a business.
